Front 529 gear install for Zack
(27 compact 480x360 pics loading)
MARCH 30 2005

Just received the 529 Yukon gears....These particular ones did not have a recognizable name or emblem on them. This was basically all it said on the pinion.

The finished cut looks high quality.

This is all there was on the ring. After a long talk with one of the guys at Randys, I was basically assured that I would like the quality of these ......from Ambrose, Italy I was told.

Good threads...

The teeth on the ring look nice.

Here's an inventory of most everything I need for this install. Everything was cleaned and inspected.

When someone is trying to save money, sometimes even the pinion bearings can be re-used....especially if it's for the front end. The front sees maybe 1% use.

For my first pinion depth....starting with an .080 plus .017 shim. I'm really kinda unsure how close I will be on the first shot, as I haven't set up this particular brand.

The crush sleeve does not get installed 'til the end. Just shove the pinion in...outer pinion bearing...then flange...then nut.

Apply gear oil to both pinion bearings...

There is no crush sleeve so bearings can be damaged by over-tightening. Tighten the nut cautiously until a reasonable drag is established...about 6~10 ft/lb.

File both surfaces mildly to get rid of high spots then mount the ring to the the carrier.

A few steps were skipped here but just basically load the ring up and snug the carrier bearings very tight. The backlash here measured on the loose loose side at .011" but good enough for a pattern check.

Drive side. Doesn't look that far off with the .097" pinion shim.

coast with .097" shim

All I did here was tighten up the backlash to .006" and the definition has improved.(drive side)

coast .097"

Gonna make sure I have the best possible pattern by comparing painted patterns using .103" and .090" for pinion depth. First, try .103"....

As expected, looks a little deep but there are times where I might use this.

coast looks solid.

Re-shimmed the pinion with .090" and, as expected, it shows shallow.

shallow on the coast also. So based on the 3 values, looks like something around .101 would be nice.

This time the crush sleeve is added as I know this is the final tweak.

Blue Loctite works for me.

Tighten the pinion nut until about 6 in/lbs is achieved.

Drive side .101"

Coast .101" ...........done.
